For sure, the cost of medicines in the United States of America (USA) continues to increase since the 1990s. Partially, the rise in price of prescription drugs can be attributed to the introduction of expensive specialty drugs. Additionally, the lack of medicine price controls in the USA is another reason why the cost of drugs has been increasing tremendously. Yang et al. (2019) affirm that pharmacy costs for hidradenitis suppurative (HS) rose sharply between 2013 and 2018 (Yang, Beck, Bhutani, Feldman, & Shi, 2019). HS is a skin disease that requires more hospitalization than other dermal illnesses.
Pharmaceutical costs should be regulated to save many Americans from falling prey to manufacturers, who set high prices to maximize their profits. Notably, price controls are significant since they set a price threshold in which the seller cannot go beyond. That way, medication costs remain in a range that the majority of individuals can afford. For instance, organizations such as the National Average Drug Acquisition Cost (NADAC), should be given powers to regulate the cost of drugs in the USA.
