Will focus on health behaviors, including how we eat, how much we move, whether we use substances (alcohol, nicotine, and other drugs) that may compromise our health, and whether we engage in risky behaviors. One of the main questions in the field of Health Psychology is why people choose to engage in behaviors that can lead to poorer health, and why we do not engage in other behaviors that may actually prevent the development of illness/injury. Choose a specific health behavior and conduct an informal experiment by either observing yourself or those around you and try to draw some tentative inferences about why people engage (or do not engage) in this behavior.
The assignment should be in the form of a 2-3 page written assignment, double-spaced pages (11 point font, 1 inch margins), an APA style reference list, no exceptions. The quality of writing and style should be scholarly, professional, and polished. Polished means the paper is free of errors. You will be assessed on all aspects of APA style including but not limited to writing, grammar, bias in language, punctuation, appropriate attribution of ideas, quotations, and references. You will be asked to consider how the topics we are discussing in class apply in either your own life or in the lives of people around you. The specific questions are provided below. Substance abuse and use are the main public health worry that affects every level of humanity. Individuals, families, communities, and overall government spending is impacted by the use of licit and illicit substances. Different categories of drugs affect an individual body in diverse ways, and the impacts with drugs can differ from individual to individual. How drugs affect a person depends on various factors, including general health, the degree and strength of the drug, and if any drug is in the body at the same time. It is significant to remember that illicit drugs are not controlled substances, and hence quality and strength vary from one bunch to another. Most people started to smoke when they were youths. Those who have parents or friends that smoke are possibly to start smoking compared to those who don’t. The tobacco industry’s adverts, low prices, and other promotions for the products are the great inspiration in our society. The tobacco industry uses millions of money every year to generate and market adverts that show smoking as fabulous, glamorous, and safe (Maritz, & Mutemwa, 2012). The use of tobacco is also publicized in video games, social media platforms, and even on television. And cinemas showing smokers are also another huge influence.
