Personhood in the Nursing as Caring Theory
Humans can think rationally and make the most appropriate decisions by retrieving relevant information from their memories. Personhood entails the sense of people being living creatures who highly recognize creating and maintaining proper relationships with others. Every person can enjoy the privilege of personhood by feeling the sense of belongingness that is developed by relating well with others. Besides, personhood involves being caring, authentic, knowing the actual meaning of life, and demonstrating the congruence between one's behaviors and beliefs. In other terms, personhood depicts how individuals form good relationships with others, which results in proper patient care. The paper focuses on the concept of personhood is used in nursing as a caring theory.
Personhood is the foundation of the nursing caring theory and emphasizes understanding things that make an individual complete. Marianne Sofronas, Franco Carnevale, and David Kenneth Wright assert that personhood is central in nursing (Sofronas, Wright, & Carnevale, 2018). According to western philosophy, the two primary things that confront the notion of personhood are illness and health. On that note, a healthy person usually interacts with others without difficulties. However, when one becomes ill, a person cannot form proper relationships with others due to suffering, pain, or lack of comfort. That is the point where health professionals intervene, and through personhood, they give appropriate care to patients so that they can recover and get back to their normal lives. In that perspective, the personhood showed by nurses determines whether the sick person heals quickly or not. For example, suppose the caregiver fails to relate well with the patient. In that case, there exists a high probability that the ill individual will not get well faster due to the lack of proper understanding.
One of the best ways to make sure that caring is prioritized for patients is by endorsing Jean Watson's human caring theory (Pajnkihar, Stiglic, & Vrbnjak, 2017). The caring theory emphasizes personhood that significantly contributes to patients' satisfaction with the medical services provided in healthcare organizations. Watson defined caring as the moral ideal for the practice of nursing that facilitates enhancement, preservation, and protection of human dignity (Pajnkihar, Stiglic, & Vrbnjak, 2017). In that light, personhood comes in since it helps in creating respectful and trustful interpersonal relationships between caregivers and patients. Watson argues that creative factors of caring, patient-centeredness, love, and compassion bring nurses closer to their patients (Pajnkihar, Stiglic, & Vrbnjak, 2017). Consequently, caregivers understand patients' needs entirely and work toward achieving them, leading to proper nurse-patient interactions and faster recovery.
