The American health care system is one that is established to have some of the highest rates when compared to most of the developed countries. Foe the longest time, Americans have had to pay a premium for their health care and even with the introduction various health care delivery systems, there are aspects that still remain highly volatile. Health care is one of the biggest expenses for the American government and this further translates to the same level of spending for the citizens (Nesvisky, 2016). Over the years there have been health care reforms to try and bring down the cost and make sure that most of the Americans are in a position to access health care. Of the two most common systems that the Americans have become accustomed to for the longest time are the fee for service and the managed care, health care delivery systems.
The managed care delivery system is one that is designed around managing costs, utility and high quality of the health care services. The Medicaid care provides the consumers with health care benefits along with other additional services that are achieved through contracted arrangements between the managed care organizations and the Medicaid agencies. Americans can use this service as part of the health care insurance reforms that have been effected in the United States. Ideally they have contracts with health care providers and the medical facilities on account of providing care for all the registered members at reduced costs (Nesvisky, 2016). The networks are made up of the health care providers and thus how much a patient pays depends on the network a patient has chosen. Some of the networks tend to have less restrictions while others tend to have a lot of restrictions. The more the restrictions, the lower the cost of care and the opposite is true. Patient that are looking for flexible plans have to bear with the higher costs associated with such networks. It is also important to note that there are three main types associated with this health care delivery system; preferred Provider Organizations, Point of Service, Health Maintenance Organization. With the Health Maintenance Organization one only pays for care within the network. This means that patient has to have chosen a primary care doctor to coordinate all the care associated services. In the case of the Preferred Provider Organization, one usually pays more if they get care within the network and in case they get care from outside the network they still have to pay for part of the costs incurred. With reference to the Point of Service, one is given the chance to choose of taking up the Health Maintenance Organization option or the Preferred Provider Organization whenever they need care (Nesvisky, 2016).
