Patient Advocacy and the Nursing Profession
Patient advocacy in the field of nursing has been widely recognized as an essential aspect of the profession. When she stressed the significance of using moral codes in nursing institutions, the initial movements began during Florence Nightingale's era. Injustices are inflicted upon the patients who are not given equal care due to their presenting circumstances. Because nurses are the primary healthcare professionals who contact these people, it is essential to advocate for their rights that have not been recognized by the institution or the present healthcare system (Davoodvand et al., 2016).
The majority of the patients are vulnerable to damage. Hence, effective advocacy is necessary to prevent failure to deliver high-quality patient care effectively. Nurses often advocate for their helpless patients to prevent the propagation of fear, hopelessness, frustration, and a sense of separation from the world (Tomaschewski-Barlem et al., 2016).
Power relations are also vital in patient advocacy, and more often than not, those who have a position in the medical field have the upper-hand.
