Institutions across the world focus on instilling academic integrity among students. They acknowledge that students who embrace academic integrity have increased potential of portraying professional ethics in the future. However, regardless of their efforts to instigate academic integrity, most students, especially those from other academic fields, usually engage in academic dishonesty. To them, getting excellent results is what matters despite the cheating approaches they use while doing their examinations. Conversely, most students in the nursing field have portrayed academic integrity over the years. As a result, the paper critically examines the association between academic integrity and professional ethics and why academic integrity is essential in the nursing field.
Part 1: Writing Sample: The Connection Between Academic and Professional Integrity
Honesty is identified as a fundamental moral value in all learning programs. This implies that academic integrity is of significant importance in educational programs. According to Allen (2017), academic integrity refers to the dominance of honesty in the educational environment. Academic dishonesty is usually manifested as committing forgery, plagiarism, and cheating in examinations, which leads to students failing to acquire the expected knowledge.
Academic integrity is identified as a certain ethical imperative in all learning environments. However, academic dishonesty has increased significantly at all learning institutions across the globe. Nursing is recognized as an exceeding profession that depends on the moral honesty of nursing professionals to provide excellent and quality nursing care. Most of the students in nursing professions do not engage in an academic dishonesty when compared to those in other academic fields. According to a study conducted by Allen (2017), 88% of the respondents in other academic fields that participated in the study indicated that they had engaged in a cheating activity. As such, only 12% indicated that they did not engage in any form of cheating. The findings concurred with the research results of previous studies about the prevalence of academic dishonesty in other academic fields. In contrast, the findings from nursing students' respondents indicated that only 53% of them engaged in academic dishonesty. The cheating behaviors among students from other academic fields were identified as 57% to 60% plagiarism, and 45% academic dishonesty of other kinds.
The factors that lead to academic dishonesty include individual, academic, and peer influence. Individual factors comprised the association between age, training level, language, and gender. Results from the study conducted by Allen (2017) stated that males had an increased probability of cheating than their female counterparts.
