1. Anemia of chronic disease is a common occurrence in elderly patients. What is the pathophysiological mechanism behind this disease process?
Anemia is a condition that results from an excessive decrease in red blood cells (RBC). A decrease in the blood's oxygen-carrying capacity may cause lower RBC count or size or a decreased hemoglobin content of the RBCs. Hemorrhage or conditions that destroy RBCs or hinder RBC production and maturation are the causes of lower RBC. Anemia diagnosis is determined when hemoglobin (Hb) levels are less than 12 12 g/dL in a woman 13.5 g/dL in a man or when considering the red blood cell (RBC) count (Badireddy & Baradhi, 2021). Decreased RBC production is common iron deficiency anemia, including low iron diets and malabsorption syndrome, nutritional deficiencies (folic acid and B 12 deficiency). Decreased production of RBC leading to anemia can be caused by decreased erythropoietin production when there is renal failure, bone marrow disease, and rheumatoid arthritis. Increased destruction of RBC is linked to hemolytic anemia, sickle cell, splenic disorders, autoimmune diseases, and damage from therapies such as dialysis.
