Sickle Cell Disease is a condition wherein the red blood cells of an individual are abnormally shaped. Red blood cells are usually disc shaped, but for this condition, the blood cell has a crescent shape. Because of this, it can accumulate in blood vessels and create complications in the body. The condition for developing sickle-cell disease is that an individual must have two faulty copies of the gene responsible for their haemoglobin.
Many individuals with the sickle cell trait show resistance against malaria. Malaria is a disease that develops when the Plasmodium parasite is transferred to humans, usually from infected mosquito bites. The general symptoms of this disease are headache, chills, and fever. In people with the sickle cell trait, the blood cells have membranes stretched so that the nutrients needed to survive by the Plasmodium parasite leak out. Initial theories...
