The incorporation of computers in the latter part of the 20th century has significantly revolutionized industries and institutions on the way people work, communicate, and associate with each other. The internet revolution facilitates faster communication in real-time than traditional methods such as fax and telephone machines, which had major limitations such as network connectivity and distance (Tan & Goonawardene, 2017). Compared to traditional media such as books that can only be read, the revolutionized Internet can frequently facilitate information updates and an interactive zone. The theories never go out of date than traditional media such as books, which are subject to tear and waning.
The World Wide Web links have a global audience that has never existed in traditional media. The global links facilitate interactions between people from diverse regions who can share real-time information crucial for emergency treatment, conferences, and meetings (Tan & Goonawardene, 2017). Through the conferences, participants have freedom of expression on an international scale compared to the oppressive regimes which controlled populations’ access to news and information.
The revolution, however, came with a few limitations which may hinder its adoption in various institutions. First, with frequent updates, the Internet has been overloaded with information which may contain inaccurate information (Tan & Goonawardene, 2017). For instance, many employees may have to spend most of their time reading and responding to emails. Also, the Internet revolution came with democracy, and people are free to share their personal information and embarrassing photographs and clips, which may cause cyber bullying and subject individuals to depression. Some people utilize the evolved Internet to pirate media and share illegal files.
What may be the advantages and disadvantages of the Internet as a platform for healthcare applications?
The introduction of the internet system in healthcare will enable patients’ access and track their medical history while engaging in seamless communication with their caregivers. All-rounded technology is cost saving since it costs less to incorporate and run. Also, the Internet is easily accessible, and physicians can view real-time data on command (Mutlag et al., 2019). However, utilization of the Internet in healthcare may lead to equipment malfunction, lack of attention to details, and security breaches on privacy and power outages, leading to loss of deaths. Also, international healthcare regulations may limit the Internet’s utilization by some countries due to strict rules and guidelines.
