Documentation of clinical data is of great significance in the medical field. In the clinical setting, clinical decision support (CDS) is a significant tool that utilizes technological advancements, as well as traditional contrivances. The latest technological discoveries paved a way to an efficient system known as the clinical decision support system (CDSS). This was established to maximize the advantages of electronically documented records (Wasylewicz & Scheepers-Hoeks, 2019). Also, it has been used to aid the health care providers (Shahsavarani et al, 2015). Furthermore, it is used to minimize medical errors and to prevent future ones (AHRQ, 2019).
The classification of CDSS is dependent on the utility, pattern of communication, decision-making, type of counseling, and person-to-computer interface. Three of these are particularly helpful in the clinical setting. First, the utility or system function can be used as a guide in identifying differential diagnoses using keywords that have been input in the system. Examples of this are Diagnosaurus® and WebMD®. Second, the pattern of communication produced two different systems—the consulting and the critique system. The former acts as the advisor itself, facilitation the conversation, while the latter critiques the options and makes the client the ultimate decision-maker. Last and the most significant in the decision-making process where flowcharts are utilized to summarize the course of applying the solution to the problems. This allowed for a more superior system that has a better quality of outcome prediction, prioritization of medical care, and application of the proper medical management (Wasylewicz & Scheepers-Hoeks, 2019).
Furthermore, CDSS can be classified according to its clinician relations as solicited or unsolicited. Solicited information is first implied in 1970 by the use of MYCIN that allowed the doctors to select the best antibiotic for bacteremia and/or meningitis. Here, the system analyzes the information input by the doctors such as history and physical examination and laboratory results. The second type, the unsolicited information, feeds the doctor all of the information and let him/her analyze and decide for the best management for the patient (Pusic & Ansermino, 2004).
