I want to start by assuming that all of us have cell phones here, and if you do not have one, at least you have a memory that functions as a sim card. Do you know that the technology behind data storage devices is similar to that of human mind? Wait… the only difference is that data storage devices can be removed and be re-inserted. Imagine if your mind could be removed and re-inserted, how many secrets would you fear about? I will explain in this speech the significant advancements that humans have made in the technology of electronic health records. The focus is on verichips, which we can simply define as digital paper charts.
* Thesis Statement
VeriChips are injectable electronic identification chips that can be inserted under the skin for storage and retrieval of biometric data about the patient (Halamka, 2008). Their work is not, however, restricted to EHR data handling alone. They can be used as tracking devices, store other private information, and can be easily deactivated or removed from the body any time. VeriChips have potential social, legal, and security concerns.
