The human body consists of several different levels and each is essential to the smooth running of the whole. Cells, tissues and organs make up the whole orgasm and any structural change that may interfere with the smooth running of the body is termed as a disease. Anatomy is the study of the different body parts. These body parts include cells, tissues and organs. Physiology is the study of the interaction of these body parts. Studying and understanding how the different body parts operate and correlate helps one to understand any altered function.
The first structural level comprises of the cells. This is the smallest unit of life. Cells originate from the stem cell and change in the structure so as to see to the different bodily needs. Tissues make up the second structural level. The four types of tissue include, epithelia, connective, muscular and nervous (Marieb & Hoehn, n.d.). Each tissue type has specific functions that assist in the smooth running of the Organ level. This level consists of two or more tissues working together. The last level is the organs system level. It comprises of groups of organs working together to perform a specific function. The human body consists of 11 functional systems. These are Integumentary, Skeletal, Muscular, Nervous, Endocrine, Cardiovascular, Lymphatic, Respiratory, Digestive, Urinary, Male Reproductive system and the Female Reproductive system.
First and foremost, the integumentary system comprises of the skin, hair, nails and glands. It acts as a mechanical barrier on the skin by protecting the body from bacteria and infection. The skin acts as the body receptor and also regulates the body temperature. Secondly, skeletal system which comprises of bones, cartilages, ligaments and joints determines the size and shape of the body. It comprises of 206 bones. Thirdly, the muscular system is responsible for movement in the body. Smooth muscles are located in the digestive system to aid in digestion while cardiac muscles are located in the heart to help in blood circulation. The nervous system is in charge of controlling and regulating all body activities. It controls homeostasis and communicates with other systems through electrical signals (Gartner & Hiatt, 2007).
