Microbiology: explain how retroviruses replicate once inside of the cell
Retroviruses have the reverse transcriptase enzyme their genome (genetic material) is made up of RNA and not DNA like other viruses to infect a cell, retroviruses convert their RNA into DNA and insert it into the DNA of the cell to be infected and this is possible using the enzyme, reverse transcriptase. The enzyme is important as through reverse transcription of one of the two genomic RNAs, as the virus genetic materials multiply in the host genome. When the retrovirus integrates the viral DNA into the viral DNA of the host cell, this facilitates the retrovirus replication.
