The United States, just like any other nation around the globe has been facing challenges when it comes to proper health care delivery. There has been a high demand for health care services, in particular with the aging American population. From the report of the AARP, it was noted that the biggest problem in the healthcare sector is the coordination among the healthcare givers (Susan & Susan, 2012). The menace has led to unnecessary rehospitalization, repeated procedures and tests, and difficulty in discharging of patients. These are some of the key issues why the country has put its focus in restructuring the systems of health care.
Nurses play a significant role in the health sector. What it implies is that this industry will not be left behind. The sector is expected to be affected by the changes that the health care sector will undertake. The transformation or change will require a thorough think over of the professional role, nurses, in this context. There are new healthcare structures which come with new functions as outlined in the Affordable Care Act of 2010 (Peter & Catherine et. al, 2012). The nursing profession would require advanced educational transformation, the transformation of the nursing leadership and removal of all the barriers in care and practice.
The change in the nursing profession will require that nurses will have to hold advanced degrees in the same field. It will help them efficiently teach the next generation of nursing students and provide quality primary care. Healthcare is moving towards the community and is becoming more sophisticated day by day. The advanced degrees are therefore recommended for nurses to provide high quality and both family and patient-centered care. It is also recommended for a continuous study to advance and retain the clinical skills as well as develop and improve leadership skills.
The current care model is focused on acute care delivery. However, there will be transformations that will include medical attention homes expansion, enhancement of preventive care services and community health care expansion. This will alter the focus from the acute care to chronic care conditions' prevention and treatment (Peter & Catherine et.al, 2012). The new emphasis will be aided by using information technology and teams of health care. The changes will require advanced skill and theoretical understanding and thus the emphasis on the advanced degrees.
In the management and discussion policies, nurses’ opinions and views play a vital role. More nurses are required in leading the improvement of care, quality, value and safety. It has been noted from the recent research that nurses account for only a small percentage to be precise, 6% of most hospitals' board members (Susan & Susan, 2012). It is important for the nurses to perceive themselves as decision-makers. It will significantly affect the outcomes of health practices positively. There is a campaign that will foster the appointment of nurses on boards both at national and state levels in health care organizations and public policy.
