Technological advancement has touched virtually all industries, completely transforming the traditional way of doing things. The healthcare industry has greatly been changed due to the invention of new practices and interventions as well as the incorporation of communication technology in practice. Mobile learning is one of the new concepts that is proving to be a game-changer in the medical and nursing practice. This paper seeks to address the various types of mobile learning technology and their applications, the advantages of the technology in nursing practice as well as the roles of a nurse informaticist in mobile learning technology.
Mobile learning is a type of distance education where the learners make use of various educational technologies accessed through mobile devices at their time of convenience. Other than in distance learning, mobile learning technology is increasingly being incorporated in classrooms to enrich the learning process. In nursing education, studies have shown that mobile learning technology promotes motivation and satisfaction in nursing students, and also enhances their efficacy in clinical practice (Lee, Min, Oh, & Shim, 2018). In nursing practice, these technologies play a critical role in decreasing diagnostic and therapeutic errors, enhancing the quality of care given to patients and ensuring cost-effectiveness.
