They are provided with plenty of opportunities of self and career-grooming. Another benefit of becoming a nurse is that such an individual is allowed to serve humanity and can easily differentiate between good and bad. In this paper, I will talk about two different advanced registered nurse roles (nurse practitioners and clinical nurse specialists) with respect to ethical guidelines. Later on, I will discuss whether or not there are any differences in the ethical guidelines that govern these roles, followed by mentioning what situations might require one role to respond differently on the basis of ethical guidelines. Two Different Advanced Registered Nurse Roles with Respect to Ethical Guidelines While both clinical nurse specialists and nurse practitioners acquire sufficient knowledge and are capable of undertaking a variety of health-related projects, the roles remain distinct from each other. From an ethical point of view, a clinical nurse specialist may have to deal with more complex situations than a nurse practitioner (Langeland & Sørlie, 2011). For instance, they are responsible for providing advanced care and expert advice related to treatment pathways and particular conditions, and a large number of patients depend on their advice for their survival. A clinical nurse specialist possesses great decision-making power and takes care of ethical and moral guidelines while performing the duty. On the other hand, a nurse practitioner is a mid-level practitioner who may or may not be able to answer all the questions of patients and their families as well as other medical professionals. It means the ethical guidelines set for nurse practitioners are not as strict as are the moral duties of clinical nurse specialists. Unlike the clinical nurse specialist, a nurse practitioner has to access the requirements of patients, interpret laboratory and diagnostic tests, diagnose different diseases, prescribe medications and formulate treatment plans. Clinical nurse specialists have to design, evaluate and implement both population-based and patient-specific programs of care, along with performing other sophisticated duties, so they must abide by the rules and regulations set by the hospital they are working in. Also, they are to develop an understanding of the overall healthcare system and should be aware of ethical and moral values to ensure patient safety.
