Nursing practice in the modern day is characterized by complex healthcare needs and an ongoing shortage of nurses. Developing competent nurses is paramount for them to meet the diverse healthcare needs of diverse populations. According to the IOM report on the Future of Nursing (2011), the primary goals of nursing education are to ensure that nurses are well-prepared to meet the diverse needs of patients, play a leadership role, and advance science to enhance the delivery of safe and quality care. Through this graduate education as well the project I am working on, I have learned exactly what this means. I am now in a better position to understand how diverse the health needs of our patients are and how among healthcare professionals, nurses are best suited to serve these needs.
