The longevity project was a study that was designed to ascertain why people with autism had shorter life spans. The study is intended to understand a few concepts aiming at the assistance of children with autism. The idea is that, as an occupational therapist, I will develop skills to assist the child function as better as possible. One of these is support of excellent motor skills, the handwriting, and the daily living skills that lead to a near-normal life (Stokes, 2019). Children with autism have sensory processing disorders hinders them to compete with other normal children.
A child with autism can gain numerous things when they spend time with an occupational therapist. The therapist relates the life of the child through their interaction with the environment, their emotional, psychological, and social capabilities, and development as he cooperates with parents, professionals, and other teachers. The works of the therapist are aimed to assist the child to cope with environment, including the way that the child makes transits into other activities and the playing skills they possess. Autistic children exhibiting poor social behaviors or have troubles with their day-to-day living are at an increased risk of death. The autistic individuals are likely to die prematurely compared to those in the general population (Stokes, 2019).
The child also needs personal space. The depends on the way he or she responds to stimuli as well as adapt to different kinds of stimuli in the environment. The motors’ skills are observed because they illustrate the level of balance, manipulation of the object, and their posture. The last thing the occupational therapist is involved in is how the child relates with their caregivers. There are certain factors that predict mortality among autistic individuals, and the main cause of the mortality rates negative social abilities and lack life skills at the beginning of the study. Therefore, to assist people living with autism, there is need to help them develop life skills and social abilities. This will increase their length of life.
It is the work of the occupational therapist to help the child be proficient in these spheres of life.
