The number of children with special needs is increasing in the modern classroom which raises the issue of using assistive technology to aid in accommodating them and improving their learning process. The diverse forms of disabilities make it hard to have one technological design cover all the special needs which need specialized advancements depending on the particular need and environment. The importance of tackling the issue of children with disabilities can be derived from the growing number of students enrolling in learning programs currently at 34% of the total student population according to data published by the National Center for Education Statistics. Technological application towards aiding the education of children with disabilities should be more focused on ensuring social assimilation outside the classroom than the effectiveness in qualitative learning.
The importance of technology on the learning process of student with disabilities cannot be overlooked which is why there has been numerous innovations on learning technology which enhance academic skills and easier communication. Stigmatization is one of the shortcomings of disabilities which make the children to be alienated from social interactions which can have dire consequences on the learning process. For instance, if a child with Autism uses a spelling software that helps him or her in class work and leaves the equipment at school after class, he or she would feel alienate to participate in social conversations without the aid they used in class.
