Compare and Contrast of the Five Elements of Toxic Leadership
In line with this subject, it is essential to note that the five components of toxic leadership are fundamental in the definition of what toxic leadership entails. The first element in a toxic type of leadership is the destructive leadership style that is entirely destructive as the name suggests. This leadership style can derive both the undesirable and the desirable outcomes according to sources (Anderson, 2008). Several controversies are likely to emanate from this form of leadership since leaders practicing this approach are likely to fail in foreseeing the outcomes of their actions and decisions even when they work to achieve the goals of an organization, a factor that results in the achievement of both the undesirable and the desirable outcomes.
The second element of toxic leadership involves the proponents of coercion rather than persuasion and the commitment of individuals. Toxic leaders in their leadership functions are more likely to coerce and control their subjects in meeting goals rather than persuading their worker (Drury, 2005). On the other hand, the nontoxic leaders are knowledgeable in employing persuasion and commitment as a style of leadership.
The third element in toxic leadership is in the orientation of leaders and their goals and demands as opposed to the objectives of an organization and its subordinates as detailed in different sources, a factor that characterizes the approaches of a toxic leader (Drury, 2005). In contrast to this, the nontoxic leaders mainly focus on the goals of an organization that is in line with his/her goals.
The fourth aspect of toxic styles of leadership entails the levels of compromise between the destruction of the main objectives and purposes and the quality of life for constituents (Earnhardt, 2008). According to the learning materials provided, toxic leaders are more likely to ignore the qualities of life for their constituents to achieve their goals while the nontoxic leaders are concerned about their constituents.
