Part one
This week I spent 12 hours with my oncology nurse leader. We engaged in several nursing activities as a way of helping achieve quality care by enhancing both the patient safety and the safety of the healthcare providers. In this regard, I was able to observe the various strategies employed by the nurse leader in leading the team. One of the key aspects I learned was the fact that there were no ranks and no limits in the nursing practice. In this manner, it wasn't easy to identify the nurse leader particularly when they are in a group. Also, the office of the nurse leader was very open, and we often entered there any time that we were required to go in. The nurse leader had a specific system of assigning leadership roles to the team members. It was designed to run in a rotational manner such that at one time there was a team member who played a leadership role in leading the team. Also, dispute and problem solving were approached in a teamwork manner. The teams' practitioners belonged to different fields of specialization. Therefore, making a decision took all dimensions, and this helped the team to achieve a well-informed decision. Additionally, the nurse leader relied on evidence-based practices in enhancing a leadership that met the standards of nursing practice and also fit the needs of the standard procedure of nursing practice.
The type of leadership as expressed by the team leader illustrates elements of servant leadership which are vital in helping other team members grow. A servant leader sets out the objectives and goals of the team. Also, he goes further to engage in the delivery of the set objectives and goals. The nurse leader demonstrated servant leadership on several occasions (Gillet & Van, 2010). Firstly, he let the other team member work in the capacity of the nurse leader to help them develop their leadership skills. Also, He engaged all the team members in the decision-making process, and through this process, the solutions made were acceptable to all members as they were fully involved.
Part two
One instance where I feel that the team can consider me of good service to them was when we were faced with a severe complication from one of our patients.
