Collaborative Committee Meeting
Good leadership is about developing a consultative decision-making process whereby stakeholders are frequently consulted. Shared governance is the process of ensuring that stakeholders concerns and opinions are considered (Perry et al., 2014). To demonstrate how shared governance can be applied, it is important to observe the different roles of committee members and other members during meetings. It is also necessary to observe the interaction process during a committee meeting to understand the decision-making process that is commonly referred to as shared governance (Simcoe, 2012). This paper presents the observations I made during a school meeting I recently participated in as a parent's representative. The meeting was chaired by the school board, with the committee members and other representatives also in attendance.
The Function of the School Committee and the Roles of Other Members in Attendance
Within the school management system, a school committee comprises of individuals who represent various groups to assist in running of the school through share decisions. A school committee can comprise of teachers representatives, parents representatives, the school management, and other stakeholders. The main function of school committees is to review the school progress by analyzing different reports to make decisions on the future activities for the school (Pataki & Sonmez, 2013).
School committee members can also develop the rules and regulation in relation to some of the emerging issues. The committee has the mandate to amend certain policies in line with the school's mission and vision. In summary, the school committees assist the school management to make better decisions to the benefit all the stakeholders through a consultative process (Pataki & Snomez, 2013).
Like other school committees, in the meeting I attended, the committee reviewed the school's previous spending and discussed the next terms budget before finally approving the overall budget after a lengthy deliberation. The school committee considered student exchange programs, additional security personnel as some of the important issues that should be budgeted fro in the next financial year. Extra curriculum activities, issues of meals and school transport were also discussed.
The committee evaluated the previous spending to determine how best resources could be allocated using end-year evaluation report presented during the meeting. During the meeting, members had varied opinions on additional staffs. One of the committee members felt that employing new staffs would require additional income, which was not available.
