Importance of a Global Body for Health
Global health has gained a lot of attention over the years especially due to the health inequity that many people around the world experience. Addressing health issues and improving the overall health of people around the world requires collaboration and action at an international level. This is especially important because the poorest and most vulnerable nations cannot deal with health issues without assistance from high-income nations. There is, therefore, a need for a global body that monitors health, guides international health policies, and provides benchmarks for countries. A global body that addresses issues concerned with global health can serve several purposes to promote a healthier global population.
First, a global body that monitors health is instrumental in protecting the world from health risks. As revealed by Abrampah, et al. (2018), a global body can respond to disease outbreaks as reported by countries where the disease originates from and prevents such outbreaks from crossing borders. Thus, a global body can be alerted when there is an outbreak and can work towards containing the outbreak before more people become infected. For instance, WHO requires all countries to report cases of disease outbreaks so that the international community can work together to prevent the spread of the disease as well as contain the disease.
Second, a global body can offer governance on health. According to Fryatt, Bennett, and Soucat (2017) governance is essential in improving the quality of health and health outcomes. Also, as the world is trying to pursue Universal Health Coverage, governance can quicken the process and ensure that populations around the world have access to affordable and quality care. Further, Fryatt, Bennett, and Soucat (2017) reveal that effective governance can only be achieved if there is “collective action across countries, in areas such as medical research, norms and standards, and communicable disease control.” A global body can facilitate such collective action by uniting different mem...
