1) As a nurse manager on a medical-surgical floor that allows affiliated nurse schools to bring nursing students to obtain their clinical hours, you have been asked to present on the pharmacy formulary for the new student orientation. Explain to the students what the pharmacy formulary is, why it’s important, and where it can be located (you can use where your employer keeps it on your nursing unit or provide the electronic reference if automated). In the United States, a pharmacy formulary consists of the lists of prescription drugs preferred by health insurance. The list contains the drugs that are available for distribution. Furthermore, the differences in the prices of different brands are also enumerated to help the patients compare them to optimize their health needs according to their finances. The medications that are not included in the list are more costly compared to those preferred by the health insurance company (Sullivan et al, 2015).
The rules and regulations regarding the formulary vary per company. Some companies prefer using generic drugs. Thus, removing expensive brands in the list. Furthermore, the drugs that are deemed harmful or those that have negative effects are removed from the market as per the advice of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) (Sullivan et al, 2015).
In the nursing unit, the pharmacy formulary can be found electronically. The health care providers and/or patients can access the lists through logging in to the website of the company where the client availed the insurance program and provide information details and membership identification card.
2) Part of this articulation agreement allows the students to do their medication administration under the guidance of the school’s faculty. Despite the due diligence of the nursing instructor, one overly zealous student gave a medication while the instructor was with another student.
