Bias in descriptive statistics
There are various scenarios where there is likely to be bias in descriptive statistics. Selection bias is one such scenario where groups or individuals in research are based on biased samples where only certain subjects are likely to participate in the research (Andresen, Bouldin, & Wager, 2011). At other times, there are omitted variables and this distorts the estimation of parameters that can show whether there is a relationship between the dependent variable and the independent variables. It is necessary to ensure that the sample is representative of the population when using descriptive statistics. Another strategy to reduce bias is to use randomly selected participants in a study, as there is likely to be non-participants who do not wish to respond to the study. Collecting as much information as possible allows researchers to adjust for possible sources of bias in a study research, and this includes data on confounders (Andresen, Bouldin, & Wager, 2011).
