Evidence-based medicine entails integrating optimal evidence from systematic studies within scientific expertise to manage patients. Without including the most recent and up-to-date evidence, patient care approaches become outdated quickly. When the clinician fails to involve the client actively, evidence-based decision-making effectively diminishes new treatment choices to simply the “evidence.” Preventing the emergent reductionist technique in healthcare practice, clinical expertise should be integrated into patient values and preferences to control the application of evidence to the respective patients. This is because family-centered care, evidence-centered healthcare decision-making, and patient involvement require that clients’ preferences influence the decision-making processes. Patient involvement in medical decisions is enhanced when the treatment plan is anchored on patient preferences, clinical judgment, and medical evidence.
