Cultural Values and Communication

Other (Not Listed) Instructions:

Individual Assignment 4 – Learning outcome 2 and 3 (5%): According to our readings this week, the GLOBE model argues for culturally appropriate communication styles; the prescriptive advice is that managers should adopt culturally-appropriate communication styles based on three criteria. Reflect on and discuss the applicability of this model. In doing so, consider when the idea of cultural noise might hold validity or be fallacious. You are welcome to draw on examples from cross-national organizations in your reflection.
*Remember to critically evaluate and build on the readings this week and/ or previous weeks in your reflection.

THIS IS THE COMMENT FROM THE PREVIOUS REFLECTION ASSIGNMENT PAPER. PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU READ THE THINGS BELOW AND WRITE ACCORDING TO THE ADVICE AND COMMENT FROM THE PROFFESOR.
Thanks for this reflective assignment. Positives of your assignment are that you had a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. You also clearly drew on the Ang and Earley reading. You also attempted to build in your own perspective in response to the readings.
Well done in these respects! Currently, you are at a "meets" standards level. To bring your next paper up to the "good" or "excellent" standards level, this is what I suggest:
(1) Have a clear thesis statement/ topic sentence. This will have you have a clear perspective / point that guides your paper (I wasn't always sure where you were going with the paper and what the point in each paragraph you were trying to make was). Have that in your first paragraph, and when doing so, make sure that you specify something that you are arguing. For example "In this paper I will argue that ethnocentrism is part of moral relativism"
(2) Have around 3 main points you want to make to support you thesis statement/ topic statement. This is what will inform each of your paragraphs. The last sentence of your introduction, for example, might say "In doing so, I will make three main points: that culture shock..., that X, and that Y.
(3) Make sure each of your body paragraphs clearly is centered around each of your three main points (e.g., culture shock, X, and Y).
(4) Make sure you substantiate your claims with evidence, rather than your opinions. For example, you might say (paragraph 3), Cultural intelligence training may be limited in real organizations. These authors neglected to consider that foreign subsidiaries may not need cultural adjustment. Indeed, other research shows that cross-cultural adjustment is less important when working with people from the same national culture (citation" (this is just an example to explain what I mean).
(5) Finally, I suggest editing. Some of your paper did not make full sense, but if you read it through, I think you can tweek things so that they come through clearer.
As a final point: remember that this is a reflective assignment rather than summary of concepts type of assignment (so having a perspective you are building is important).
I truly hope all this detailed feedback is helpful for you for the next assignment.

Cultural values influence communication, thereby affecting the formation of trust of the conversing parties (Deresky, 2017). In line with this, I shall explain the importance of understanding masculinity and individualism, the two of the most essential cultural values, which have positive and negative effects on the behavior of the speaker and the responses of their partner.
The first cultural value is masculinity, which positively affects the individual by promoting decisiveness and determination, and negatively due to competitiveness (Merkin et al., 2014). Masculinity is exemplified by both sexes. Males are generally competitive and decisive, probably due to social norms. However, females can compete with the same attributes, with the same level of effectiveness. Winnberg et al. (2008) recognized this as female masculinity, which removes the ties of biology and disproves the cultural influence of gender stereotypes.
From experience, male masculinity can either provoke or discourage women from engaging in a meaningful conversation. The provocation is probably secondary to their determination to engage with other people. Men are assertive to the information that they receive and provide. Thus, they can guarantee that their knowledge is sufficient and their claims are indisputable. Conversely, female masculinity is secondary to their strong mind and willpower to engage in a complex or straightforward conversation. However, some women are submissive, which hinders the exchange of ideas between opposite sexes,...
