D-Cycloserine is a Broad-Spectrum Antibiotic
The bacterial cell wall-inhibiting drug I chose is D-Cycloserine. It is currently available under the brand name Seromycin, and it is an antibiotic used to treat tuberculosis, primarily. However, it is also used as a treatment for anxiety disorders due to its capability to function as an NMDA agonist (Moskow et al., 2020). D-cycloserine's main mode of action is to inhibit cell wall biosynthesis in cells during the cytoplasmic stage of cell wall synthesis (Sarkar et al., 2017). Its specific target is the D-Alanine-D-Ligase and alanine racemase enzyme that functions in the formation of the peptidoglycan layer of bacterial cell walls (Batson et al., 2017).
D-cycloserine is a broad-spectrum antibiotic, despite its popularity in use for tuberculosis treatments (PubChem, 2022). To date, there are no reported severe and serious drug and CAM interactions associated with D-cycloserine, but there are reports of moderate drug interactions with ethionamide, isoniazid, sodium picosulfate, magnesium oxide, and anhydrous citric acid (Cycloserine, 2021).
Since D-cycloserine is an antibiotic, it is still important to take caution when administering or prescribing it to patients. Antibiotic resistance was—and still is—a growing problem in the fields of medicine, healthcare, and biology. This is because many people are taking antibioti...
