Identifying those at Risk of Malnutrition
Introduction and Key Points
When one hears about malnutrition, one question that comes to mind is: - What is it, and how do we identify those at risk of malnutrition? Malnutrition refers to the lack of adequate or vital nutrients in the body due to poor diet and digestive conditions (Klanjsek et al., 2019). It is a problem because it can negatively affect a person’s treatment response and delay recovery. According to Badosa et al. (2017), patients with malnutrition are vulnerable to more extended hospitalization, increased complication rates and mortality. To identify those at risk of malnutrition, physicians can initiate nutrition screening during a hospital stay. Early identification of these individuals can help nutrition experts concentrate on people who are likely to benefit the most (Klanjsek et al., 2019). Clinical, anthropometric, biochemical and dietary indicators should be integrated into a screening program to enhance efficiency.

Systematic searches were performed in the following databases; - CINAHL, PubMed, and MEDLINE (Klanjsek et al., 2019). About 26 articles were located in this search (Klanjsek et al., 2019).

(2019) identified screening as a method used to discover those at risk of malnourishment and susceptible to diseases. According to the article, nutrition screening and assessment attempt to determine the current nutritional status and the relevant nutrient requirements and recommendations. Through screening and assessment tools, nutrition professionals can identify individuals at risk of malnourishment (Klanjsek et al., 2019).
