Organic foods were once found only in specialty grocery stores, but they are now widely available in specialty and conventional grocery stores alike. In fact, the organic food market, which was at $1 billion in 1990, has grown to a staggering $286 billion market in 2010 (Organic Trade Association, 2011).
Clearly the popularity of organic foods has skyrocketed over the past few decades, but the debate remains as to whether organic foods are worth the often-higher price in comparison with conventional foods. With this in mind, along with outside research, answer the following questions.
What does the label of "organic" mean? What types of foods can be produced organically? Do organic foods carry any special risks for interactions with medications?
What are the advantages and disadvantages of consuming organic food? Is organic food healthier than conventional food? Why or why not?
Do you choose to purchase and consume organic food? Why or why not?

Organic implies that the food or agricultural products meet quality standards without the use of synthetic chemicals and genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Fruits, vegetables, grains, and even meat can be produced organically but is mostly the food crops than meat.
Do organic foods carry any special risks for interactions with medications?
Organic crops are at times more vulnerable to certain pests, and since organic farming discourages the use of pesticides, this poses a challenge to maintain organic production. Livestock may also be affected when the medication causes antibiotic resistance and even affects livestock that are not medicated.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of consuming organic food? Is organic food healthier than conventional food? Why or why not?
The certification of organic food improves the quality of the products from their preparation, processing to their consumption. Organic foods are not in contact with chemicals, synthetic additives, or toxic substances. The non-use of pesticides, fungicides, and herbicides positively impacts the environment, preventing contamination in soils, water, and land (Azzurra, Massimiliano & Angela, 2019). Nonetheless, organic products offer little variety, which may limit the extent to which they improve healthy diets. They may lack fats and sugars like those that are modified in non-organic foods. Yet, organic food is healthier than conventional food as it is of better quality, has a higher nutritional value, and is free from chemicals.
