1. Why does the fast fashion industry cause a lot of pollution? Take an example.
The fashion industry is continuously growing and expanding due to the dynamic changes that occur gradually. And with the current trends of mass-producing textile products due to the fast changes in fashion, there is also a large and direct hit on the environment. According to Pal & Gander (2018), together with clothing, textiles, and footwear, they are the fourth most influential factor that greatly affects the environment. This perspective of ranking was directed by the European Environmental Agency and is stated that the continuous development of fast fashion is the main cause of it. They also presented that the high water and chemical usage and the production wastes during the process of making the products are examples of its environmental effects. This is also supported by Niinimäki et al. (2020), where they stated that the fashion industry's estimation of carbon dioxide emission was quite high, specifically it was about eight to ten percent. While for the high water usage, they also explained that approximately twenty percent of the industrial water pollution and approximately thirty-five percent of the microplastic pollution were directly caused by this industry. And when the time comes of not all products being sold, the waste from the process and the excess products also serves as a factor of more pollutions to occur. Overall, this implies that the great uprise of producing clothes in factories also causes a great uprise, not only towards the environmental health but also the living beings that reside within it.
2. What small and incremental changes are being taken by the fast fashion industry to reduce its impact on the environment and climate?
Due to the current environmental factors that occur due to the fast-changing industry of fashion, figures within this industry are trying to produce changes even on the smallest scale possible. Niinimäki et al. (2020) disclosed that there are three possible ways to address the current environmental problem, and these are (1) limits to growth, (2) closing the loop, and (3) waste in focus. These three as subtle changes that can directly help the improvement of environmental health. Limits to growth are coincidentally concerned with the sustainability potentials. This process indicates that the mass production of textiles and clothes should be limited to the needs of the con...
