Identify how COVID-19 traveled from the origin of Wuhan, China, to the United States
Overview: COVID-19/ SARS-CoV-2
The COVID-19 virus, SARS-CoV-2, first occurrence was reported in Wuhan City of China. However, the origin of the virus and its transmission to human populations remains a mystery (Shumway, Ibrahim & Moss, 2020). There is scant evidence suggesting that the novel virus became pathogenic prior or after the first outbreak. The first persons to test positive had visited the Huanan Seafood Market. It is unknown whether the virus originated from the meat market or was transmitted by visitors. The current strain of Covid-19 had never been reported before the Wuhan outbreak in December 2019 (Menkir Tigist et al., 2021). The SARS-CoV-2 strain differs from the first Corona strain, SARS-CoV-1, reported in 2003. The COVID-19 virus is found in a large number of non-human hosts (Umakanthan et al., 2020). These non-human hosts include cattle, camels and bats. Though the animal to human infection cannot be ruled out, it however remains a rare occurrence. Several studies suggest that Covid-19 could have originated from bats or pangolins, and jumped into human populations.Thereafter, it spread through community transmission or human to human infection (Menkir Tigist et al., 2021; Umakanthan et al., 2020). The corona virus was renamed Covid-19 by the WHO in 2020.
Tracking the COVID-19 Spread: Wuhan China to the United States
After the first human case, SARS-CoV-2 transmission occurred through human to human contact. Covid-19 patients can infect other humans through breathing, coughing or exhaling infected droplets (Shumway, Ibrahim & Moss, 2020). The infection occurs when the droplets come into contact with the mouth, nose or eyes. The primary means of infection is through contact with infected persons. The virus can spread from both symptomatic and asymptomatic persons. However, CDC researchers have found that 10% of acovid-19 infections occur in symptomatic as opposed to asymptomatic cases (Menkir Tigist et al., 2021). Still, infected droplets from infected persons can land on surfaces and remain active for 24 hours. Persons touching these surfaces can get infected if they touch their mouth, nose or eyes. Given this mode of transmission, it is possible that COVID-19 may have been transmitted from Wuhan to the U.S through a human host. When the first case was reported at Wuhan china, the U.S government was complacent to take preventive measures. Drawing from the first case reported in the U.S, and its connection to Wuhan, it’s likely that the virus was exported to the United States (Shumway, Ibrahim & Moss, 2020). Besides, reports indicate that there were arrivals from Wuhan, China a few weeks before and after the outbreak. Therefore, it’s likely that the virus could have enter...
