Interoperability
Interoperability is the ability of computer software and connected devices to exchange health information in secure access from other health information technology under applicable state and federal law and without much effort from the user.
Current Efforts by the ONC to Promote Interoperability
The health IT experts and people on the ground who understand the health and care ecosystem put together a ten-year-old roadmap plan to support the vision that ONC outlined in connecting health and care for the nation. This vision has set standards in IT and policy initiatives, their recent efforts include:
* The release of a new communication tool; the ONC standard bulleting to update the health care industry of the ONC Health IT standards and policy initiatives periodically (HealthIt.gov, n.d.).
* ONC has released the (SVAP) Standard Version Advancement Process and a draft UCDI version 2 that enables the public input into the elements that should be included in the interoperability of health data for a patient, health care providers, and other users (HealthIt.gov, n.d.).
* ONC has announced an investment fund of nearly $20 million to help increase data sharing information exchange and immunization information system. The fund comes from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and economic security act to support vaccination efforts to eradicate the Coronavirus pandemic (HealthIt.gov, n.d.).
* The announcement of the synthetic health data challenges by the U.S department for health and human services office of the (ONC) national coordinator for health information technology (HealthIt.gov, n.d.).
* The ONC has shared the 2021 interoperability standard advisory (ISA) reference edition where the public health pro, software developers, and others can track ISA RSS feed in real-time.
Impacts
These recent strategies are all towards positive progress; the bulleting will periodically update the health care industry so that everyone involved will be up-to-date on the progress of the Office of the National Coordinator for health roadmap. The release of the USCDI version 2 will enable a wide range of public input in the progress of interoperability; everyone who has something to contribute now has a platform. The eradication of the Coronavirus pandemic through immunization is made more possible through the HHS award fund and helps increase data sharing between health information exchanges. Finally, the ISA edition where standard professionals can track ISA’s (interoperability standard advisory) RSS feed.
Standards for Interoperability
