Health statistics offer information that help understand, monitor, improve and plan the use of resources to enhance people’s lives, promote their well-being and provide services. Statistics is used in healthcare for quality improvement, research, address healthcare inequalities, inventory management, risk analysis, resource utilization, patient satisfaction, and patient length of stay, mortality and morbidity, effects of new treatment, education and laboratory analysis.
Since the 19th century, statistics has been widely used in healthcare. Florence Nightingale used statistical approach to reduce the mortality rate of British route in Crimea. Through the statistical analysis, Florence Nightingale wanted to show people in the Crimean War that combatants were more likely to die in combat (Karimi & Masoudi Alavi, 2015). This ability to comprehend information and make people understand how such a thing happens can help people, understand statistics and evidence based practice in the delivery of healthcare to patients.
