United States is ranked among the countries with the highest spending in health care services. Medical spending has been increasing year by year due to a number of factors. Of interest in this case is the role that medical providers in relation to contributing towards the rising cost of medical care. It is important to note at the onset that no single factor can be blamed for the soaring costs but rather a combination of many. Nevertheless, healthcare providers play a significant role in the rising costs of medical care.
Notably, medical care providers direct most of the spending in healthcare though they are not the principle beneficiaries of the increased cost of medical care. The fact that most insurers offer hospitals, doctors and other medical practitioners under a fee-for-service system that compensates for each procedure test or visit (Appleby & Kaiser Health News, 2012). Compounded by the lack of integration in the medical system, this fosters overtreatment including but not limited to repetitive tests.
