The Wars in Afghanistan and Iraq necessitated more troops to fight in the two countries, but as more have returned to the U.S. there have been concerns that the quality of health care they receive is inadequate. This is particularly because PTSD is now recognized as a problem that has worse outcomes than health officials acknowledge. The Department Veterans Affairs (VA) has also been slow to address the mental health issues affecting the veterans. This is further compounded when there are no standardized best practices adopted to improve the mental well-being of the veterans when they visit health care centers. There is a need to provide quality health care to veterans as services are suboptimal.
In 2011, a three judge bench panel held that a delay in providing mental health services to the veterans who required the intervention of the VA violated their constitutional rights (Grohol). The problem of mental health care affecting veterans is laid bare by those who commit suicide, suffer post traumatic post disorder (PTSD), extreme depression and report psychological scars years after combat. For instance, five out of eighteen cases under the care of the VA end up committing suicide (Grohol).
One of the ways to reduce medical emergencies is addressing primary care among veterans, where the continuity of care is associated with better patient outcomes (Katz, McCoy and Vaughan‐Sarrazin 2510). However, this is not always the case for veterans and especially the older ones where continuity of care is still a challenge.
