Healthcare experts have reviewed several strategies of containing costs to minimize spending on health care. Gatekeeping is one of the simple and effective measures to contain costs. Gatekeeping in primary health care reduces unnecessary interventions offered by specialty care providers (Godager et al., 2015). It implies that patients access specialists and can be admitted upon referral for care by their primary care physicians. Gatekeeping has been argued to deny needed care, but in reality, it is a way to protect patients from unnecessary procedures and treatment (Godager et al., 2015).
