The health and social services in the United Kingdom have undergone major changes. Major debates led to the subsequent reforms that began in 1948. Before major reforms were introduced, the UK health and social systems did not work well; it was a patchwork of institutions that were not accessible to many people (Dickinson & O'Flynn, 2016). Over 68 years after the introduction of the National Health Services, the UK is considered as having the best welfare system funded by the government that is free at the point of use (Dickinson & O'Flynn, 2016).
Key milestones in the development of health and social care services
Milestone I: the launch of NHS marked the beginning of major development in both health and social care services; NHS is publicly funded with the view that good healthcare needs to be available to all regardless of one's levels of income (O’Hara & Gosling, 2014).In 1948 to date includes, providing free health care and social services at a central point. The health care in Britain under the NHS brought together organisations that brought together hospitals, including all health care workers to offer services at one point (Weindling, 2014).
Effects: For the first time after the establishing the NHS, the government coordinated mass vaccination programme for polio and diphtheria for children under the age of 15 years. Before the initiative, the UK reported close to 8,000 cases of polio and 70,000 diphtheria annually (Weindling, 2014). Milestone II: another significant milestone under the NHS occurred in 1960 when the first kidney transplant took place at Edinburgh.
