My healthcare organization recognizes that reporting is essential to mistake mitigation and prevention. Being open within families and patients by sharing medical errors and mistakes with them enhances trust. The fiduciary duty of hospitals exists in families’ and patients’ trust that healthcare professionals will take care of their welfare and wellness. When healthcare workers cover up mistakes and errors, they do not essentially remain concealed and often compromise the healthcare organization’s mission. Consistent with my hospital’s mission, employees have an ethical responsibility to admit medical mistakes. Organizational and professional procedures and policies, performance improvement, and risk management endeavors demand instant reporting. When communities, families, and patients lack trust in the healthcare organization, adversarial and suspicious relationships emerge. In addition, breaching the canon of truthfulness and fidelity by deception undermines provider-patient interactions.
