Introduction
Chronic and infectious diseases are some of the illnesses that afflicts millions of people around the world every year. On the one hand, Chronic diseases are those that have persistent of long-lasting effects on the health of an individual CITATION Med18 \l 1033 (MedicineNet.com, 2018). Some example of this are arthritis, obesity, and diabetes, among others. On the other hand, infectious diseases are those that are considered to be contagious and could have a fatal consequence when contracted. This includes diseases such as AIDS, measles, and polio. While both of these are immediate problems that need to be addressed, recognizing the scope and severity of its effects is of prime importance in order to effectively allocate resources to address such. In line with this, this article would focus on the differences between chronic and contagious diseases around the world. The succeeding sections would provide a quantitative analysis of each of these diseases, which would include a visual analysis of such. After this, an analysis and recommendation of the figures would be provided in the latter sections to apply the knowledge gained from the article. All in all, the author of this article believes that by analyzing the pertinent differences between chronic and infectious diseases, institutions that are created to address such problems would be much more equipped to deal with these kinds of situations.
Chronic and Infectious Diseases
Despite the differences in scope and mode of transmission, both chronic and infectious diseases have been a burden for institutions around the world. The rise of people who contracts either of these diseases has not only created an economic strain on nations, but also become the reason for millions of deaths around the world. In a report published by the World Health Organization, they estimated that by the year 2020, deaths among and global burden for people who have chronic diseases are expected increase by 73% and 60%, respectively CITATION Wor19 \l 1033 (World Health Organization, 2019). In contrast to this, infectious diseases are said to have only caused 46 deaths per 100,000 people in the year 2014, which is also a significant decrease in the said number from 800 per 100,000 in 1990s CITATION 10016 \l 1033 (Rettner, 2016). While there seems to be a wide difference these days, a look at data from the previous decade (Figure 1) will show that chronic diseases have always led to a greater mortality rate as compared to infectious diseases CITATION The07 \l 1033 (The Economist, 2007).
