What is involved in the ABC Model and Functional Behavioral Assessment/Analysis?
The ABC model and the functional behavioral assessment tool is used to understand the meaning of individual reaction especially when one displays unwanted behavior. For the ABC model the letter a stands for adversity of a situation, B is individual beliefs and C is the consequences of our behavior (Crone et al., 2015).
Functional behavior assessment examines the circumstances that encourage the unwanted behavior; an assessment is conducted to identify events that are consistently present when certain behaviors occur. ABC model and functional behavioral assessment are less aversive interventions because the process involves identifying the negative behavior and removing the source of reinforcement at the same time using the reinforcement to adopt appropriate skills (Crone et al., 2015).
What assessment steps will the school nurse take?
The assessment steps include identifying the interfering behavior in this case Jerry displays disruptive behavior that interferes with learning. Examine the circumstances surrounding the occurrence of the disruptive behavior. The nurse can use indirect assessment to gain information from others sources by interviewing other students to understand the result of jerry's behavior (Crone et al., 2015). According to Crone et al., (2015), part of the assessment process involves direct observation in the environment where the disruptive behavior is likely to occur.
What recommendations might the nurse make to the teacher for altering Jerry's behavior? Is an SST referral in order?
Disruptive behaviors occur when student's needs are not met, therefore; the first recommendations are to ensure that the students' needs are met in an appropriate way. Children try to express their needs through behavior (Shaw & Dukes, 2013).
Disruptive behavior displayed by Jerry is an attention seeking behavior. In this case, the teacher needs to develop a proactive strategy which involves giving Jerry the much-needed attention at specific times while in school, SST referral is not appropriate. Jerry is not a candidate for 504 because children eligible for 504 are students with a severe learning disability (Shaw & Dukes, 2013).
