My Growth and Development During a Practicum Experience
This practicum experience was transformative based on the diverse exposures, and interactions with interdisciplinary professionals, and other stakeholders within the hospital settings. After the introduction and orientation with the facility, I started off by shadowing the first day during ward rounds and other monitoring activities with my preceptor (Mau et al., 2022). This gradual familiarization was fundamental in assisting me to achieve the first goal of assessing, recognizing, and diagnosing mentally ill patients correctly. By learning from the professionals and applying skills learned in my course, I found it easy to execute mental examinations, recognize clinical presentations for every psychiatric condition, and evaluate associated results. This understanding occurred due to increased acquisition of knowledge for utilizing diverse screening tools and interpreting results. The routine boardroom meeting and collaboration with other experts enabled me to refine my interrelationship skills, making it seamless to maintain a professional and therapeutic interaction with all stakeholders and my patients while observing OSHA, HIPAA, and other clinical standards. Thus, the practicum was educative, which fast-tracked my capacity to achieve the set goals and objectives.
During this learning process, I encountered several challenging patients. For instance, S D presented with diverse signs and symptoms that required careful evaluation and assessment of her condition for accurate diagnosis. The most challenging aspect about this patient was ruling out other differential diagnoses due to the reported symptoms and disease history. G J’s condition evaluation was also challenging because of the complicated nature of his symptoms that led to a diagnosis of schizoaffective unspecified. As a result, this case required a follow-up within two weeks to determine the progress of the patient after the quetiapine 25mg prescription. Finally, A.
