Full practice authority (FPA) refers to the unrestrictive independent practice granted to advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) to allow them to practice to the full extent of their education and training (Aymami & Furlong, 2019). APRNs with FPA can diagnose, order diagnostic tests, provide treatment, and prescribe medications for patients (Stucky et al., 2021). The support for FPA has a long history across the country. Nurses have been advocating for FPA because they understand the value it would bring to patient care and the overall healthcare system. According to Aymami and Furlong (2019), one of the reasons why FPA has gained traction in recent years is because it is expected to help address the looming shortage of primary care providers in the country. Also, the Institute of Medicine report shed a light on the need for nurses to be given FPA as part of transforming the healthcare system (Stucky et al., 2021; (Hassmiller & Bilazarian, 2018)). However, some states still place stringent regulations on APRNs scope of practice and require physician supervision, which hinders APRNs' ability to practice independently.
Significance of FPA
FPA empowers APRNs and allows them to provide unrestricted care to patients, especially those in underserved communities. According to Myers and Alliman (2018), FPA has been linked to increased access to healthcare services, especially in primary care, as well as improved patient outcomes. APRNs can independently provide services that are otherwise provided by primary care physicians, thus ensuring increased access to care. Aymami and Furlong (2019) also indicate that FPA is linked to reduced hospitalization, improved management of chronic conditions, and reduced visits to emergency departments.
