Introduction
The case study, Women’s care-seeking experiences after referral for postpartum depression, was done by Sword, Busser, Ganann, McMillan and Swinton. This is a case study, the authors were trying to establish the experiences that the women have after they are referred from the public health nurses for probable postpartum depression (WebMD, 2017). As such, the case study is based on the question, what are the women’s experiences as they seek care, after they have been referred from the public hospitals by nurses having the probability of suffering postpartum depression. There a number of underlying issues that the case study analyzes (Sword, Busser, Ganann, McMillan & Swinton, 2008).
The design
To get the best results of the case study question, the authors used a qualitative descriptive design. This is an approach that was relative to the phone interviews that the researchers used. Ideally, the participants were required to answer questions that were written down and read out to them on a phone interview. The respondents would then give their responses as per the questions that were posed to them through the phone interview (Sword, Busser, Ganann, McMillan & Swinton, 2008). This offered the participants more freedom and courage to answer the question without fear of being judged. The approach was encouraged by the fact that most of the participants would likely feel intimidated by the element of face to face interview.
Sample size
To establish the results that would then be analyzed later in the case study, the researchers approached 18 new mothers. The mothers received home visits and were requested to take part in the prevention intervention (WebMD, 2017). Out of the various new mothers that were visited, only 18 had qualified and agreed to the interview as part of taking part in the case study (Postpartum Progress, 2017).
Procedure
The participants were first screened for postpartum depression before they could be included in the interview. After our weeks of screening, the team of 18 participants was then picked to take part in the case study (Sword, Busser, Ganann, McMillan & Swinton, 2008). The data collection process involved a semi structured telephone interview to avoid the complications of having a face to face interview where the candidates were likely to feel intimidated by the procedure.
