The fast-food industry is one of the largest and most popular industries in the food business. In 2020 alone, studies show that fast-food generates annual revenue of a whopping $570 billion worldwide. Accordingly, estimates predict that these global revenue and consumer base levels would improve and increase in the coming years. Thus, in this article, the author would like to focus on an analysis of what makes the fast-food industry so popular and the effects of frequently eating fast-food. All in all, the author believes that although the fast-food industry offers a significant level of convenience and predictability, it also causes many risks to those who frequently eat in fast-food restaurants.
Causes for Fast-Food Consumption
One of the main reasons why fast-food restaurants have consistently increased their demand is the greater access and convenience. In one study by Sanchez (2019), the author noted that fast-food chains have become too accessible in almost every part of the world. In the United States alone, fast-food chains have become so common that various choices could be found in almost every corner. Additionally, fast-food restaurants are also more ‘financially’ accessible for the masses, which is very cheap. It was found that one of the main reasons why fast-food is too cheap is that it explicitly targets low-income clients and encourages them to consume their products CITATION OLe16 \l 1033 (O'Leary, 2016). Accordingly, this focus on massive demand contributes to the damage to the environment. In one article written by Riley (2019), she noted that the consistent increase in demand for fast-food restaurants had caused several negative impacts due to its “(1)use of land, (2) its consumption of water, and (3) its emission of greenhouse gases (GHGs). Accordingly, several studies also showed that the need for meat in the fast-food chains contribute to direct and indirect environmental impacts that forced animal farms to increase their sewage and water contamination CITATION Ger07 \l 1033 (Gerber, Opio, & Steinfeld, 2007).
