Food wastage refers to the loss of unconsumed food. Food wastage occurs in various stages, such as production, processing, distribution, retail, and consumption. Conversely, food loss refers to the removal of food intended for consumption from the food chain. In most cases, food that ends up as waste ends up completing the food supply chain up to a final product but still gets discarded because of expiry. Non-profit organizations that purchase foods for vulnerable communities are likely to experience food wastage if they lack a solid plan. Accordingly, leftover foods on plates are an indication of food wastage in society.
The advent of cheaper farming methods makes food wastage a problem likely to continue in the decades to come. Abiola (2020) suggests that people who practice small-scale farming in their neighborhoods are likely to waste food because of the notion that they have it at any time they need it. Conversely, people who practice large-scale farming are likely to waste food because of the perception that they have it in abundance. Food wastage has become a household problem because most people do not understand what it means to lack food. Lack of educational incentives on the importance of reducing food wastage has made food wastage a global menace.
