Among the social determinates of health affecting the family are healthy behaviors and race. The healthy behaviors affecting them are the regular consumption of unhealthy food and smoking a husband and children who don’t want to exercise. The race also affects the family. The husband is African-American, and this increases his chances of developing blood pressure issues and diabetes. Eating unhealthy food puts the family at the risk of developing health conditions such as obesity. Unhealthy food is associated with a high amount of cholesterol. Whenever such cholesterol accumulates in the body, the person can become obese or develop heart diseases. The solution to avoiding such health conditions is by eating healthy food. Smoking is also associated with heart and lung diseases. The fact that the husband smokes in the family's presence puts them at the risk of developing these health conditions. The girls rarely exercise, which puts them at the risk of developing the associated health conditions. The wife is already complaining of reoccurring back pain. If left untreated, the back pain could result in other health conditions that could make it difficult for her to carry out routine activities. The race also affects the children because they are also African-American, exposed to similar health conditions as their father. This social determinant of health is unavoidable in this family due to their race.
Health screenings help in the identification of health issues that could affect an individual. In this case, the husband will require lung and heart diseases screening since he has been a regular smoker for a long period. Smoking is associated with lung and heart diseases.
