In this course, the dances of Istanbul from the 16th century to the present are presented with their connection to historical, political, cultural and societal backgrounds of the city. The Final Project is a chance for you to use that knowledge in order to explore the concepts that are most interesting to you. Dance in Istanbul goes beyond its forms and styles. It is related to the civil and religious life of the people living. Dance can be a form of worship and a form for protest. The information from the course is a source for you to support and deepen your perspective in your ideas. I should be able to see your personal interpretation of the course material. The sources for your project should go beyond the material presented in the course. Use additional sources to explore your perspective while answering the prompts for the particular project you choose.

For gathering material please expand your sources,  use the concepts from the course in your text in bold (do not use sentences from the course content, write your own sentences, the project is about your own interpretation of the material). You are expected to provide appropriate citations for all resources. All of the below forms are to be created in the discussion box with the use of the Rich Content editor tools.

1- Choose a specific country, belly dance form, and time.


2- Create a brochure in which you write original promotional text by integrating the below concepts with examples of images and videos of belly dance.


3- Describe the dance movements and the context it is danced.


4- Present information about the origin of the belly dance. Compare the belly dance form you choose to the belly dance forms covered in the Unit 5 lecture content.

The dance YouTube video titled Rahel Raqs Sharqi (Bellydance) at Ya Helwa V part 1.1 is a modern Raqs Sharqi recorded in 2016. Raqs Sharqi is an oriental belly dance form that originates from Egypt, and the information obtained from the dance community traces the form to Cairo in the 1920s. Raqs Sharqi dance movements are characterized by lifting arms with a graceful flow of movement on the upper back through the fingertips (RahelDance). Moreover, in the upper body, the dance incorporates a lift of the pelvis's rib cage and forward movement. Furthermore, the ribcage consequently moves up and down in a rhythmic flow. The shoulders are also rolled forward and backward, combined with shimming and wiggling involving the shoulders or the entire ribcage. Furthermore, twists and backward movements of the hips are involved. Sharqi involves little steps and several hip work. Footwork involved includes sideways and backward pelvic movements with minimal forward steps. The belly is predominantly used, and in most cases, it rolls outward and is pushed inward strongly. Moreover, Raqs Sharqi places more value on the interpretation of the music other than the body's physical potential. Furthermore, this form of belly dance upholds authenticity and its tradition reflecting the Egyptian culture. During the 20th century, western colonialists and tourists white attained by Sharqi dancers in nightclubs. However, the Raqs Sharqi was culturally significant during marriages and other ceremonies among the Egyptians. Furthermore, the dance was not entirely embraced as a form of dance meant to earn a living. Beyond the ceremonies, the dance was a form of entertainment among small social setups like family gatherings.
Information on the origin of the dance is uncertain but is rooted in ancient times. The dance was discovered in the 19th century when travelers visited the Middle East. Comparatively, Raqs Sharqi is Baladi's form with a long history within the orientalist perception as a feminine form. Artists and writers from other parts of the world developed an interest in the dance due to its peculiar movements. During this period, the dance became an element or entertainment among many artists who explored their interest in the dance. However, there exist certain religious connections of the dance to the cult of fertility. Like other forms of belly dancing, the Sharqi is associated with the ancient Goddess-worshipping culture. The dance was characterized by movements of the pelvis and that torso, which gave it an artistic impression; as soon as the travelers got interested in the dance, the dance changed.
