The Falls Management Program (FMP) is a quality improvement program that allows healthcare facilities to improve their fall care processes and outcomes. Such a program is critical because falls are common in healthcare facilities (Stevens & Lee, 2018). For instance, about half of the residents in nursing homes fall annually. A third of those who fall do it more than once a year. At the same time, falls have serious consequences, especially for older adults. When patients fall, it reduces their quality of life. Injuries resulting from the falls adversely affect their ability to operate. The residents who fall become fearful of falling, resulting in self-imposed activity limitations. There is also an increased risk of death on the part of the patients. Additionally, injuries and deaths resulting from falls are a major reason for lawsuits against facilities and healthcare staff. Because of the adverse consequences of falls, this quality improvement program is meant to prevent additional harm to patients in healthcare facilities.
The target population for the FMP is nurses in healthcare facilities. Nurses are the primary care providers tasked with caring for patients. When dealing with older adults, nurses need to be aware of the risk of falls among this population. Because of the importance of nurses in preventing falls, this program targets them intending to educate them on what needs to be done. The program seeks to educate nurses about the causes of falls and the steps they can use to prevent them. The education initiative will equip them with the skills needed to manage patients such that they can deal with instances of falls. Here, nurses will learn how to handle patients at risk of falls, especially older adults. They will be equipped with the skills to prevent falls, like identifying the patients at risk, familiarizing them with the environment, and teaching clients the use of alarms, among others.
The FMP is beneficial to patients, healthcare professionals, and facilities. For the patients, the FMP will improve their health outcomes in healthcare facilities. Minimizing falls will mean that fewer patients will sustain injuries. More patients will be willing to engage in activity since the risk of falls is minimized.
