In the digital era, many healthcare organizations continue to implement electronic medical records (EMRs) to facilitate the quick sharing of information and improve patient care. In particular, health professionals have a strong belief that technology bolsters interoperability among the information systems in the medical field. In that light, I agree with these physicians that the remaining issues are nontechnical.
The Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) refers to interoperability as the degree through which devices and EMR systems can transfer or exchange information and its appropriate interpretation. At this juncture, one must understand that different software and computer systems are capable of transferring patient data among themselves and in a way that can be interpreted by the receiving end. For example, the data from pharmacies, clinics, laboratories, and hospitals can be shared with ease today. Evans (2016) argues that the application of EMRs has resulted in ethical problems that involve patients’ data privacy, security, access, and retrieval (Evans, 2016). For this reason, it is clear that there are no more technical problems as long as the computer systems can share data among themselves without any manipulation or misinterpretation.
